Nobody Hands You The Whole Box At Once

By Scott M.October 5, 2026
Nobody Hands You The Whole Box At Once

Nobody hands you the whole box at once.

They hand you a wall. One word. One afternoon. Then they walk away and forget they ever built anything.

You're the one who moves in.

A kid gets told "you're too sensitive" once by a coach who forgot it by practice the next day.

20 years later, that kid is an adult swallowing things in meetings that needed to be said, still checking the walls of a box somebody built in five seconds.

That's the part nobody talks about.

The box we keep ourselves in. The one we and others labelled.

I sat with an 84-year-old woman recently.

She is a great-grandmother. A life full by any measure. I asked what she remembered from being a teenager.

She didn't have to think.

A name her brother gave her. One afternoon. Half a joke. He probably forgot it by dinner.

Her hands started shaking as she told me.

71 years later, she was still living inside it.

Some would call that dwelling. Something she should've "let go of" by now.

But he built the box in a sentence. She's been renovating it for seventy years, trying to prove the label wrong.

Still calls him her hero, by the way. That's the part that stays with me.

We don't build our own boxes alone. Someone hands us the first wall.

The rest, we frame in ourselves.

What box are you still living inside, and who handed you the first wall?
